Baby/Child Naming

A Naming Ceremony is a ceremony designed to welcome a new baby or a child into the family.

Our naming ceremonies can be designed for an individual child/ baby or for a small group of children in a family unit. A naming ceremony could also be used when a child has been adopted by a family, to mark a new beginning and to welcome them into a new loving family unit.

A Naming Ceremony is an alternative to a more traditional Baptism, and it offers a ceremony for those families who don’t follow an organised religion.

At the core of this ceremony are strong family values, and the ceremony promotes special relationships between parents and the child. It also embraces the opportunity for strong relationships with ‘Supporting Adults’ (often called God Parents in the Christian faith), who will make promises to support and be a positive influence on the child as they grow up.

Naming Ceremonies in the UK have become more popular in recent years, this coincides with a decline in the number of babies having a more traditional baptism.

Across the world, many cultures have carried out ‘Name giving’ ceremonies which are steeped in history. Some of these are religious by nature, whilst others are non-religious. However, universally, all Naming Ceremonies have existed to celebrate the arrival and acceptance of the newest members of our communities.
